The online advertising expenditure in Czechia increased in the observed period. While in 2008, the expenditure was 5 billion Czech koruna, it reached 56.8 billion koruna in 2022, which was an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year. This figure was estimated to rise further and peak at 60.8 billion koruna in 2023. This would mean that the dynamic rise would slow down. However, it would not stop, as the spending would increase by seven percent.
Dominance of online advertising
The online environment has been the dominant advertising media type since 2018 when its d market share surpassed TV advertising. The gap between them has been widening ever since, with online advertising gaining over half of the total advertising market share as the share of all the other media types decreased. This process did not slow down, even with the COVID-19 pandemic or the energy crisis starting in 2022. Quite the opposite happened, as online advertising thrived in this period. That is an expected outcome, with the online world expanding vastly during the pandemic, as many people worked and communicated online daily. On the other hand, advertising in some traditional branches, such as print or out-of-home, decreased significantly in 2020.
Efficacy of online media advertising
The high spending on online advertising could be justified by its effectiveness. Search engines were the most effective way of discovering brands, products, and services. Other online options, such as product comparison websites or brand and product websites, were also quite popular. The largest share of online advertising expenditure consisted of display advertising, such as Google Ads or through Facebook, with over two-thirds of the total spending. Web search advertisements were also quite heavily invested in. Out of all the social media, YouTube had the largest potential advertising reach, followed by Facebook and Messenger.
