In 2018, the public transit agency that emitted the most greenhouse gases (GHG) in the United States was the MTA New York City Transit with more than one million metric tons on CO₂ equivalent. It was followed by NJ Transit with GHG emissions of almost 656,400 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent.

(in 1,000 metric tons of CO₂e)
* Direct emissions are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions that occurred at the vehicle when fuel was consumed. Indirect emissions are CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions that occurred at the power plant when electricity was produced or in the process of producing hydrogen.
** Upstream emissions are GHG emissions that occurred during fuel production and distribution, also called “well-to-pump” emissions.
