In the financial year 2023, Australia’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) received over 87 thousand animals, approximately 33.75 thousand of which were cats. In general, the total number of animals, including dogs and cats, received by the RSPCA in Australia has declined over the years since 2017, which is partially attributable to the pet adoption frenzy amid the pandemic.
Adoption instead of purchase
A 2023 survey revealed that nearly 30 percent of Australians acquired their pets from animal shelters. Financially speaking, adopting a rescue or shelter pet comes with lower adoption fees than purchasing from a breeder, as most rescue animals are already vaccinated, desexed, and microchipped where relevant. Aside from these upfront costs, the owners-to-be may also save on training expenses since many pets from shelters and rescues are already house-trained and previously acquainted with family life.
One adopted, second chance for more
What’s more, the perks of pet adoption go way beyond the financial benefits. Not only does the adopted furry friend get to change its life around and be saved from probably being later euthanized, but other homeless animals can also be rescued thanks to more available capacity. Furthermore, the costs of the adoption would directly help cover the veterinary expenses for animals currently placed in the care of these shelters.
