As of January 2020, 66 percent of the time U.S. consumers spent online was spent on the open internet and 34 percent within the so-called walled gardens (social media such as Facebook or online shopping platforms such as Amazon). However, the walled gardens accounted for 60 percent of digital advertising spending, leaving the open internet with a share of 40 percent.
