Natural gas import dependency in the EU 1990-2023
The European Union's dependency on natural gas imports has generally increased over the last three decades. In 2023, around 90 percent of the natural gas in the EU came from imports, down from 98 percent one year earlier. Back in 1990, countries that constitute the EU only imported roughly 52 percent of natural gas consumed. Following the Russia-Ukraine war, LNG has overtaken piped gas as the greatest natural gas supply source in OECD Europe.
