Cerebrovascular disease was the leading cause of death in Uruguay in 2020. During that year, around 2,268 people died from this group of conditions, known for affecting blood flow to the brain. Ischemic heart disease was the second major cause of death in the South American country, with 2,021 reported casualties. Other relevant causes of mortality that year in Uruguay were Alzheimer's disease, trachea, bronchus, and lung cancer.
