Ischemic heart disease was the second major cause of death in the South American country that year, which amounted to approximately 17.9 thousand deceases. Moreover, with nearly 662 deaths per every 100,000 inhabitants, Peru recorded the highest mortality rate due to COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean as of January 1, 2023.
