The leading cause of death in Paraguay in 2021 was COVID-19, with 15,715 deaths. During that year, around 4,096 people died from ischaemic heart disease, also known as coronary heart disease, which affects blood supply into the heart due to narrowed arteries. Diabetes mellitus was the third cause of mortality in the South American country, with around 3,201 deaths.
