Heavy rail transit (also known as rapid transit, metro, subway, or underground) in the United States emitted approximately 27.2 percent fewer greenhouse gases (GHG) in 2018 compared to 2008. Over the same decade, the carbon efficiency in single-occupancy vehicles also improved, emitting 10.4 percent fewer GHGs in 2018.
