In 2019, self-employment accounted for around 75 percent of the total working population in Sub-Saharan Africa. The share of self-employed in the region has generally decreased since 2000. In that year, over 81 percent of the people working in Sub-Saharan Africa were self-employed.

Self-employed workers include four sub-categories of employers, own-account workers, members of producers' cooperatives, and contributing family workers.".
