Opinion on decriminalization of pregnancy termination in Ecuador 2021

Following the Constitutional Court's ruling in February 2021, Ecuador's National Assembly approved regulations allowing abortion in cases of rape. Termination of pregnancy is now allowed until the 12th week of gestation in the case of women, and until the 18th week for girls under the age of 18 and women in rural areas. Prior to this change, abortion was only allowed when the mother's life was at risk or when it resulted from the rape of a woman with a mental disability.

According to a survey carried out in May 2021, one month after the Ecuador's high court decriminalized abortion in cases of rape, more than two third of Ecuadorians were in favor of allowing termination of pregnancy in case of rape.
