The high prices of fruits were the leading reason to limit the amount consumed in Japan as revealed in a survey conducted in October 2023. The Japanese government recommended a daily intake of 200 grams of fruits, but 43 percent of respondents did not reach the amount because the products were too expensive. While Japan has wide nature-filled areas outside the metropolitan regions, the majority of its terrain is mountainous, resulting in a lack of arable land suitable for fruit cultivation.
