The majority of Japanese consumers planned to eat traditional New Year's food (o-sechi) as revealed in a survey conducted in October 2021. While more than 58 percent of respondents planned to eat traditional dishes at the beginning of the year, close to 24 percent did not have any plans in that regard.
O-sechi refers to a variety of assorted dishes eaten during the New Year's holiday. The dishes are arranged in stackable boxes, with each representing a special meaning like "health for the upcoming year", "joy", and "longevity".
