The majority of Japanese consumers planned to eat traditional New Year's food (o-sechi) as revealed in a survey conducted in October 2021. While more than 66 percent of respondents aged 60 years and older planned to eat traditional dishes at the beginning of the year, the share was lower among younger respondents.
O-sechi refers to a variety of assorted dishes eaten during the New Year's holiday. The dishes are arranged in stackable boxes, with each representing a special meaning like "health for the upcoming year", "joy", and "longevity".
