In 2019, around 48 percent of women of reproductive age in Haiti had anaemia, the highest prevalence recorded in the Latin American region. Anaemia prevalence above 40 percent is considered severe by the World Health Organization (WHO). Other countries with high prevalence were the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Venezuela and Paraguay, all of which recorded values above 22 percent. Anaemia is a blood disorder characterized by reduced red blood cells and haemoglobin concentrations.
Prevalence of anaemia among women of reproductive age in Latin America in 2019
The source defines prevalence of anaemia among women of reproductive age as follows: "Percentage of women aged 15−49 years with a haemoglobin concentration less than 120 g/L for non-pregnant women and lactating women, and less than 110 g/L for pregnant women, adjusted for altitude and smoking."
