Sweden: recipients of net ODA in Africa 2021

In Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the country that received the highest sum of net official development assistance (ODA) from Sweden in 2021. The total net sum allocated to central African country amounted to 104 million U.S. dollars. This was also the country that received the highest amount of net ODA worldwide from Sweden that year. Somalia received the second highest sum, at 99 million dollars, whereas Mozambique was the third largest recipient. In total, the amount* of bilateral aid from Sweden to Africa in 2021 was 1.35 billion U.S. dollars.

The source adds the following information: 'Official development assistance (ODA) is defined as government aid designed to promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries. Loans and credits for military purposes are excluded. Aid may be provided bilaterally, from donor to recipient, or channeled through a multilateral development agency such as the United Nations or the World Bank. Aid includes grants, "soft" loans and the provision of technical assistance. The OECD maintains a list of developing countries and territories; only aid to these countries counts as ODA.'

Net sums are the amount received after loan repayments are subtracted. Hence, negative values mean that loan repayments were higher than the total sum received.

*Total sum includes regionally allocated ODA.
