Number of accommodation places for women victims of violence in France 2012-2023
In 2023, the French government reported having reserved 2,000 more accommodation places for women victims of violence than in 2021, when 7,820 places were allocated. These are not necessarily specialized places, which provide specific support, secure accommodation, or a non-mixed environment. However, there is no definition or conditions to be met for a place to be considered "dedicated", and these places are not always occupied by the target public. Since the 2019 Grenelle against domestic violence, however, they have been the subject of sustained political communication.
These dedicated accommodation places remain insufficient, insofar as, according to the Haut Conseil pour l'Egalité entre les femmes et les hommes, more than 20,000 women and children need emergency accommodation each year to enable them to leave a violent spouse.
