U.S. adults feelings toward the metaverse 2022

According to a survey conducted in the United States in January 2022, 33 percent of respondents stated that they felt curious about the metaverse, whilst 27 percent said they were uninterested. Overall, almost a quarter of those asked reported feeling suspicious about the metaverse and 12 percent were confused.

The concept of a metaverse

The metaverse is a digital environment that enables social connections in virtual reality. Bringing into the use of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and blockchain, it allows users to have next-level social interactions in 4D. It repeats the patterns of the real world, making the user experience closer to reality, at the same time allowing them to create their own virtual environment, letting them create digital assets or so-called non-fungible tokens, such as avatars, nicknames, or even virtual property. Currently, big companies like Meta (previously known as Facebook) and Microsoft are developing their own metaverse platforms. Games are considered to be the most common asset for metaverse, as they carry most of its characteristics.

Use of metaverse in the United States

Even though it is relatively new, the metaverse is becoming quite popular among U.S. adults. Many internet users across the country are joining or considering joining it, a December 2021 survey says. At the same time, quite a big share of U.S. adults are not familiar or have never heard of the metaverse. Metaverse is seeing such popularity mostly because users can do things in virtual reality that they wouldn’t do in real-life, such as trying extreme sports like skydiving, bungee jumping, or paragliding.
