In the 2023 season, roughly half of hurricanes tracked worldwide had a maximum category 4 or 5, meaning a sustained wind speeds of 113 knots or higher. In total, the season also saw 30 hurricanes with a category 3 or above, which are thus qualified as major hurricanes. Of these, seven were category 5 hurricanes, with sustained wind speeds of 137 knots or more.

Categorization is based on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane scale for sustained wind speeds. Additional information on the Saffir-Simpson scale can be found here.
South Indian and South Pacific Ocean seasons are defined to start on July 1 of the previous year. The 2023 season therefore runs from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
