Health care system: health outcomes ranking of select countries worldwide 2021

According to a 2021 health care systems ranking among selected high-income countries, the United States came last in the overall ranking of its health care system performance. The overall ranking was based on five performance categories, including access to care, care process, administrative efficiency, equity, and health care outcomes. For the category health care outcomes, which takes into account health outcomes most likely to be responsive to health care, the U.S. was ranked last, while Australia took first place. Outcomes such as infant mortality or preventable mortality were included. Care process includes measures of preventive care, safe care, coordinated care, and engagement and patient preferences.

Equity focuses on income-related disparities, based on standardized data across the 11 analyzed countries, in the access to care, care process, and administrative efficiency performance domains.
Health care outcomes reported here refer to those health outcomes that are most likely to be responsive to health care.
