Between 2011 and 2020, most disaster-related fatalities in the Asia-Pacific region were due to hydro-meteorological disasters, amounting to an annual average of about 6.7 thousand. Similarly, hydro-meteorological disasters also accounted for an average of over 25 thousand annual fatalities between 1970 and 2010, followed by more than 22 thousand annual deaths due to geophysical disasters.
Hydro-meteorological hazards are natural occurrences driven by both weather and water processes, such as cyclones, floods, or droughts. Geophysical hazards include earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, while biological hazards would be various types of infectious diseases, most recently the coronavirus (COVID-19) - therefore, the fatality number due to biological disasters can be expected to increase significantly in future reporting.
