Among selected Brazilian states, Rio de Janeiro had the highest number of civilians killed by the police in 2020, totaling 1,245. In comparison to the previous year, this represents a decrease of 31 percent. São Paulo followed second, with 814 civilians deaths in 2020. In both of these states, the majority of people killed by the police were of black ethnicity.
