Nigeria had the largest sheep population in Africa as of 2022, roughly 50 million heads. Chad and Sudan followed, each with a sheep stock of 45 million and 41 million heads, respectively. That same year, Africa had around 419 million heads of sheep, one of the major species raised for livestock farming in the continent.
