Employment rate in Hungary 2010-2023
The employment rate among Hungarians between 15 to 64 years old followed an increasing trend over the observed years and reached over 72 percent in 2019. However, as a consequence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak this figure decreased by 0.3 percentage points in 2020. According to the findings of a survey conducted in the same year, nearly every fifth Hungarian experienced a serious loss of income due to the outbreak of the pandemic. By 2023, the employment rate increased to almost 75 percent in the country.
Employment opportunities
In the third quarter of 2022, over 89 thousand job vacancies were recorded in the country. By comparison, 125 thousand women and 111 thousand men were registered job seekers in Hungary as of October 2022. In 2021, the highest number of Hungarians were employed in the manufacturing industry, measuring at over 700 thousand, while a further 400 thousand employees were active in wholesale and retail trade.
Working conditions
In 2021, Hungarians worked on average 39.36 hours at their main job each week, which marked a slight increase compared to the figures recorded in the previous year. As of 2022, Budapest recorded the highest number of individuals who worked from home occasionally or regularly, measuring at approximately 197 thousand people. This figure was significantly higher than the values recorded in other regions of the country.
