Number of civilians killed by security agents in Brazil 2021, by state and race

In 2021, 1,060 black and pardo Brazilian people were killed by security agents in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In comparison to the 154 white people that died under the same circumstances, the amount of black civilians killed in this state was almost seven times bigger. In the state of Bahia, the discrepancy was even larger, with 13 white people in contrast with 603 black people killed by the police. Moreover, in some Brazilian states, the share of killings by the police without any ethnicity information about the victims reached over 65 percent. Therefore, the number of deaths of black civilians by security forces could be remarkably higher than what it is actually disclosed.
