From the 4th quarter of 2019 to the 3rd quarter of 2020, the number of commercial construction contractors facing material shortages in the United States remained relatively stable, with values ranging from 45 to 54 percent. However, in the year after that, this number increased to 93 percent. In the last quarter of 2021, 95 percent of the surveyed contractors reported facing at least one material shortage. In that same period, steel was the most reported material shortage.

The data for each quarter came from previous editions of the same publication.
From the 4th quarter 2019 to the 2nd quarter 2020 the survey question referred to "product shortages experienced by contractors".
The contractors contacted for these surveys do projects in the commercial and institutional sectors of the U.S. (including multifamily residential). The number of contractors that responded to the survey has suffered slight variations from quarter to quarter, ranging from 207 to 215 contractors in each survey. In all cases, their demographics had a similar distribution regarding the type and size of their company, their job function, and the location.
