The Russian government subsidized the TV network RT (formerly, Russia Today) and its websites with 27.4 billion Russian rubles in 2020. The volume of financing was planned to increase in the federal budget from 2022 to 2024. Furthermore, the media agency Rossiya Segodnya received over 7.5 billion Russian rubles in subsidies in 2020. In 2022, it was assigned around 9.4 billion Russian rubles, of which one billion Russian rubles was to be spent on technical modernization.
Who owns RT (Russia Today) and Rossiya Segodnya?
Established in 2005, RT is operated by the autonomous non-profit organization (ANO) "TV-Novosti" ("TV-News"), which is financed from Russia's federal budget. The company's revenue exceeded 808 million Russian rubles in 2020. Rossiya Segodnya, a news agency, is a federal state unitary enterprise founded in 2013. It operates several news platforms, among which are Ria Novosti and Sputnik.
In which languages is RT broadcast?
RT has several channels in different languages broadcast worldwide. Besides Russian, there are versions in English, French, Arabic, and Spanish. In February 2022, the German Commission on Licensing and Supervision (ZAK) blocked RT DE, the German version of RT, from broadcasting in the country due to license issues. In response, the Russian government banned the operation of Deutsche Welle, one of Germany's leading public radio and television companies, in Russia. Furthermore, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Union (EU) announced blocking RT broadcasting across the bloc.
