The majority of Japanese consumers ate grilled meat (yakiniku) by buying pre-prepared meat at retailers like supermarkets and grilling it at home as revealed in a survey conducted in August 2021. Only around three percent ordered prepared meat as takeout to grill it at home.
Yakiniku is commonly prepared by cooking thin slices of meat on charcoal or gas grills and resembles western barbecue in preparation. Thin slices of meat for grilling are available as packaged products in Japan.
