Texas has the largest energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. in 2021, at 664 million metric tons (MtCO₂). The state's industrial sector was responsible for roughly 36 percent of this total, while transportation accounted for 32 percent. By comparison, the transportation sector accounted for more than 50 percent of California's energy-related emissions that year.

Total state CO₂ emissions include CO₂ emissions from direct fuel use across all sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation, as well as primary fuels consumed for electricity generation
