In 2022, the fertility rate in Israel slightly decreased to 2.89 births per woman. Since 2010, the rate has generally remained stable, with slight fluctuations. The fertility rate in the country is one of the highest among the developed states. It is considerably higher than European fertility, which generally remains below two-birth per woman.
The Israeli population keeps growing
The high fertility rates in Israel is the driving factor behind the stable population growth in Israel, alongside long life expectancy. The average life expectancy in Israel reached 82.8 years in 2019, one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Therefore, Israel is in a unique situation where both fertility and life expectancy are high. Furthermore, the Israeli population is estimated to increase at least till 2026, and since the crude birth rate in Israel is higher than the death rate, the pace of the population growth in Israel remains relatively high.
Different fertility rates from district to district
While the total fertility rate in Israel has remained stable, fertility rates in different Israeli districts are more varying due to the country's diverse populations and religion. For instance, in 2020, the Jerusalem District recorded a high fertility rate of 3.86, whereas in some districts the fertility rate was below 2.5. This variation occurred due difference in fertility rates among some religious communities.
