In 2023, the domestic shipbuilding and marine equipment industry ordered around 2.86 million metric tons of ordinary steel products at steel producers in Japan. Ordinary steel is carbon steel, which does not require heat treatment and contains silicon, manganese, phosphor, or sulfur. Special steel, in contrast, is steel alloyed with elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, or vanadium and has received heat treatment.
