Hydrogen production is expected to be the most expensive share of the final hydrogen price for households in the European Union in 2040. The source forecast hydrogen production to cost around 1.5 euros per kilogram of hydrogen. By comparison, distribution, transmission and storage would come in at a combined cost of 1.4 euros per kilogram of hydrogen.
In order to mitigate climate change impacts, hydrogen has been explored as an energy source. At the same time, new production methods, strategies, incentives, and guidelines are also being developed. However, as of 2020, global hydrogen production is dominated by natural gas reforming, and green hydrogen prices are not competitive enough to attract customers.
