Internet shutdowns cost in total over 1.9 billion U.S. dollars to Sub-Saharan African countries in 2021. At least ten nations in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced major internet outages and social media disruptions that year. Nigeria recorded the highest economic cost in the continent - around 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. Overall, the disruptions affected some 171 million internet users in Sub-Saharan Africa.
