On Monday October 4th, 2021, Facebook suffered a major outage, which caused online services Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as the main Facebook social media platform to be inaccessible for several hours. During the week of the Facebook outage, WhatsApp registered a decrease of 33 percent in time spent on the platform by users in the United Kingdom. By comparison, SMS and instant-messaging application Google Messages registered an increase of 76 percent in time spent by UK users during the outage.
