In 2021, the planted area of upland rice in Ibaraki prefecture amounted to around 402 hectares, making it the Japanese prefecture with the largest planted area of upland rice. With only two prefectures currently involved with this type of farming, the planted area of upland rice in Japan was much lower than the planted area of paddy field rice.
