In Iceland, the number of refugees has increased steadily over the last 10 years. In 2012, only 55 persons with a status as a refugee under UNHCR's mandate lived in the country. However, by 2022, the number had increased to over 5,200, a number that must be seen in relation with the Russian invasion of Ukraine that year. People from Ukraine made up the highest number of refugees in Iceland in 2022.
