As of September 2024, the Net-Zero Banking Alliance counted a total of 144 members worldwide. Most of the signatory banks were located in Europe (79), while 29 members were located in the Asia Pacific.
Convened by the United Nations, the Net-Zero Banking Alliance was launched by 43 founding members in April 2021. The alliance brings together banks that are committed to aligning their operations with the ambitious goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. To enter the alliance, each bank's CEO must sign a commitment statement. Along with the 2050 target, the statement binds the bank to set an emission target for 2030, and intermediary targets to be set every five years since then. Additionally, signatory banks are required to publish information on their emissions and disclose their progress each year.
