Germany has released approximately 94 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) into the atmosphere from fossil fuels and cement production since 1750. Germany was one of the first countries in the world to industrialize, and by 1815 it had produced almost 20 MtCO₂. Industrialization progressed in the following years as Germany went through an economic boom. This saw Germany's total emissions rise further, and by 1900 the country had emitted 6.4 GtCO₂. Although Germany is now the biggest cumulative CO₂ emitter in Europe, it wasn't until the 1980s that its cumulative emissions exceeded those produced by the United Kingdom.

(in million metric tons)
Characteristic
Cumulative carbon dioxide emissions in million metric tons
Cumulative production-based emissions of carbon dioxide (CO₂) since the first year of data availability, measured in metric tons. This is based on territorial emissions, which do not account for emissions embedded in traded goods. This measures CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels and cement production only – land use change is not included.
