In 2019, some 3.4 billion gallons of fuel were consumed by American Class I railroad companies. This number was a decrease of 6.5 percent year-over-year. Between 2011 and 2019, fuel consumption of class I railroads fluctuated, peaking in 2014 at just under 3.9 billion gallons. In 2020, the rail sector was responsible for three percent of all transport-related carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.
