A survey conducted in Ireland in 2020 asked respondents between the ages of nine and 17 years old if they had experienced anything online in the past year that had upset or bothered them in some way. Overall, eight percent of boys and 19 percent of girls said that they had negative online experiences in the past year. Girls are more than twice as likely than boys to encounter online content that bothers or upsets them and 26 percent stated that people being nasty to each other was the most frequent negative encounter.
