According to a survey conducted between 2020 and 2021, over 28 percent of Tunisians intended to move abroad to improve their income and working conditions. Improving living conditions was the main reason for nearly 27 percent of respondents, while around 23 percent intended to emigrate to find a job. Pursuing education abroad was a factor pushing approximately 14 percent of Tunisians to leave their country.

The survey included a total of 27,607 respondents, of which:
- 11,148 Tunisians non migrants;
- 6,475 returnees;
- 7,003 migrants;
- 2,981 foreigners residing in Tunisia (immigrants).
