An important activity for many people over the Christmas period is to put up Christmas decorations, such as trees and lights. Shops are no exceptions and join in with the festive decorations during the busy holiday trading period. Over half of British adults believe November is an appropriate time for shops to put up Christmas decorations and displays, according to a 2021 survey. Only one percent of respondents thought that shops could leave their decorations up all year round.
UK Christmas spending
In their own homes, roughly a third of men and women in the UK planned to spend up to 50 British pounds on decorations, making it the most common expected budget for decorations. However, half of men planned to spend more than this. Overall, Christmas sales in the United Kingdom are expected to rise, after a slight fall in 2020, mainly due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, sales are predicted to reach 84.7 billion British pounds.
Where do decorations come from?
The overwhelming majority of Christmas decorations come from China. It is the biggest supplier of Christmas decorations in the world, exporting 6 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of Christmas decorations in 2020. The next biggest exporter was the Netherlands with 284 million U.S. dollars’ worth of exports. When it comes to Christmas trees, however, many trees come from the Nordic countries. Denmark, for instance, exports trees all around Europe.
