According to a survey conducted between 2020 and 2021, over 26 percent of the Tunisians living in the area of Grand Tunis intended to leave their country to live, work, or study abroad. The intention to emigrate was lower in other regions. For instance, around 11 percent of the respondents from the North Western region planned to leave Tunisia.

The survey included a total of 27,607 respondents, of which:
- 11,148 Tunisians non migrants;
- 6,475 returnees;
- 7,003 migrants;
- 2,981 foreigners residing in Tunisia (immigrants).
