Distribution of economic zones in Africa 2021, by ownership
Most economic zones in Africa were owned and managed by Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). As of 2021, PPP-operated economic zones accounted for over 50 percent of the total economic zones on the continent. On the other hand, private zones were the least prevalent in Africa. Economic zones - including Special Economic Zones (SEZs), free trade zones, free zones, export-processing zones, industrial parks, bonded logistics parks, and urban enterprise zone - amounted to over 200 in Africa as of 2021.
