Number of economic zones in Africa 1990-2021

As of 2021, there were over 200 economic zones in Africa. The number increased significantly within the period under review. In comparison, the continent had less than 20 economic zones before 1990. Economic zones include Special Economic Zones (SEZs), free trade zones, free zones, export-processing zones, industrial parks, bonded logistics parks, and urban enterprise zones.
