In fiscal year 2021, around 596 metric tons of certified organic konjac were produced in Japan. Figures decreased to 376 metric tons in fiscal year 2018 but increased again in more recent fiscal years. Konjac is an edible corm that is cultivated in East and Southeast Asia.
Agricultural produces distributed as organic foods in Japan have to be certified under the Organic Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) system. The certification is done by auditors accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
