In fiscal year 2021, around 131 metric tons of certified organic buckwheat (soba) were produced in Japan. The figure decreased to 23 metric tons in fiscal year 2016, but indicated an upwards trend in more recent years.
Agricultural produces distributed as organic foods in Japan have to be certified under the Organic Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) system. The certification is done by auditors accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
