In fiscal year 2022, around 7.7 thousand metric tons of certified organic sprouts were produced in Japan. The figure increased significantly compared to around 1.5 thousand metric tons in fiscal year 2016.
Agricultural produces distributed as organic foods in Japan have to be certified under the Organic Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) system. The certification is done by auditors accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
