Forecasts for the changes in revenue and production volume of the automotive industry have worsened between May and September 2021. As of September 2021, the global automotive industry is projected to record a loss of some 210 billion U.S. dollars in total revenues for that year, paired with a drop in production of 7.7 million units. This is almost double the production volume loss forecast of May. This drop in the industry's performance is a direct result of the semiconductor chip shortage. Semiconductors are an essential part of car manufacturing, controlling air conditioning systems, monitoring tire pressure, or ensuring that the airbag is triggered in the event of an accident.
