In fiscal year 2022, around 86.7 thousand metric tons of agricultural produce in Japan were certified organic, of which vegetables accounted for the majority, with around 47.4 thousand metric tons.
Agricultural produce distributed as organic foods in Japan has to be certified under the Organic Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) system. The certification is done by auditors accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
